Master Beekeepers

Master beekeepers is a title held with distinction. It is the demonstration of a deep understanding of honey bee biology and management. Although there is no single source for qualifying one as a master beekeeper, there are various programs around the United States that offer such a title. The EAS Master Beekeeper program is the original program of its kind and arguably the hardest to attain. There are no classes, no study materials, just years of experience and knowledge that lead you to take the rigorous exams. Since the program has no structure, it may be difficult for some to prepare.

With the popularity of the EAS Master Beekeeper program, some colleges and universities have begun offering similar programs. Most will find that these programs have structure and requirements to move through the various stages of the program. If you require the structure to help you learn, then one of these programs may be a good fit for you.

Whatever path you choose, more knowledge is always welcome. Good luck should you choose to pursue one or more of these programs.

EAS Master Beekeeper

The EAS Master Beekeeper Program, founded by Dr. Roger Morse at Cornell University in 1978, was turned over to EAS to administer in 1981. It is the oldest and most highly respected program of its kind in the U.S. Certification as an EAS Master Beekeeper indicates a high level of beekeeping expertise and the ability to educate others in the art of beekeeping. EAS certification differs from many other programs in that, rather than a program of coursework with increasing levels of expertise, it consists of intensive, highly rigorous testing of a candidate’s knowledge. Visit the Eastern Apicultural Society for more details.
